Free Crochet Pattern: All My Love Heart Square Baby Blanket

Hello crochet friends! 

It's been a while since I have posted a new pattern but I have a really great one to share that I have been working on for the last few months. My sweet god daughter is having her first baby this coming fall and I wanted to crochet her a special blanket for the new little one. She has requested a neutral/woodsy colors/theme so I picked a few really great tans, browns & off whites for her blanket, I'll list them below under the supplies section.

My written pattern is for the heart square and my example blanket is baby size but you can very easily make more squares and have a blanket as big as you wish!

Supplies:  

Size H (5 mm) Crochet Hook 

Scissors

Darning Needle

Worsted Weight Yarn, 2 colors per square, 32 yards of each color

                                    For Baby Blanket Border, 225-250 yards

Important Notes: 

-Color changing and carrying the yarn is used for this pattern, if you haven't worked a pattern with color changing/carrying I suggest you check out my tutorial above, skip to 00:05:15 timestamp.

-Gauge is not important for this pattern unless you want the exact same size as I have listed above, in that case, my gauge is: 5 sc x 4 rows = 1" 

Heart Square 

(make 25 for baby blanket size)

Starting with C1:

Row 1: Ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across. Ch 1, turn. (29) 

Row 2: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (29) 

The next row begins our color changing and carrying. I will be listing in order how many sc should be worked for each color. Remember, C1 = Color 1 (outside of the heart color) & C2 = Color 2 (heart color).

Row 3: C1: 14 sc, C2: 1 sc, C1: 14 sc. Ch 1, turn. (29)

After row 27 you can cut the C2 yarn end. 

Row 28: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 29: Sc in each st across. 

After row 29 you will need to make a sc border around the entire square.

Row 30

: Ch 1, turn. *Sc in each st across. When you reach the end of the row, ch 2 & rotate to work along next edge.* Repeat from *to* 3 additional times then join with a ss to the first sc you made of the edge. 

Fasten off & sew in your ends.

Joining Squares 

After you have completed your 25 squares you will need to join them in your desired arrangement. To join your squares lay them with the faces touching and ss the squares together using the sc edge. You can do this by working through both loops or use just the outside loops on each square. I suggest viewing the video tutorial for this part of the pattern, you can skip ahead to about the 00:59:00 timestamp where I show examples of both joins.

Ruffle Border

For the border there is not an exact stitch count, this is unimportant but I still went ahead and listed a rough count for each row.  

Row 1: Join in any st with a ss. Ch 1, *Sc in each st across. When you reach the corner, ch 2 & rotate to work along next edge.* Repeat from *to* 3 additional times then join with a ss to the first sc you made of the border. (roughly 151-155 per edge, 604-620 total)

Row 2: In BLO: Ch 1, 2 dc into each st around. Also work 2 dc into each chain on the corners using the BLO.  (roughly 302-310 per edge, 1208-1240 total)

Fasten off and sew in ends.

Free Crochet Pattern: Heart Pot Holder

Last week I shared a simple heart scrubby pattern and today I have a matching pot holder to share with you. You can find the scrubby pattern here: Scrubby Heart. The patterns are very similar but for this pattern you will be crocheting 2 hearts and then you will hold them together and single crochet around the edge to make them one. I tried a couple different yarns for this pattern when testing and I suggest a softer cotton yarn like I love this Cotton from Hobby Lobby or the Mainstays 100% Cotton Yarn from Walmart.

If this is the first heart: Fasten off and set the finished heart aside. Make a 2nd heart using the same pattern above.

If this is the second heart: Do not fasten off just yet. Continue on with the directions below.

Sew all ends in now except for the yarn you are working with. I like to sew them all in on one side of the heart and then have those sides facing each other. This way the ends are on the inside of the pot holder.

Hold the two hearts together and re-grab your yarn. Ch 1, ss through both hearts, ch 9, ss into the same space to form a ring. (see photos below)

Ch 1, turn, 15 sc in ring. Ss into the same space you made your ch 9 in. Work 2 sc into the very next stitch to the left, sc in next, 2 sc in next. (see photos below)

Continue to sc around the entire edge making sure to work through both hearts. When you reach the next 3 open stitches at the top of the next hump work 2 sc in the first stitch, sc in next, 2 sc in next. Continue to sc around. 

At the bottom tip of the heart work 3 sc.

Ss to join when you are back around to the ring. 

Fasten off. Sew in end.

Using edge color:

Ss so join in any space. *Ch 2, ss in next* repeat from *to* around. Join. Fasten off and sew in ends.

Lay your piece flat and measure. 

The swatch should measure 4" x 4".  If you do not get gauge you can try loosening or tightening your tension as you crochet or change your hook size to obtain gauge.

Row 1: Magic circle, ch 1, 15 dc in circle. Join & pull circle tight. (15)

Now you can either make your own yarn pom-pom or use a faux fur pom-pom (tutorial on how to make your own here: Faux Fur Pom-Pom Tutorial) and sew it to the top of the hat.

To make yarn pom-poms I use my hand and wrap the yarn around and around my hand (about 75-100 times depending on how full I want it). Lay out a long piece of yarn (12-18"). Carefully slip the yarn off of your hand and lay on top of the long piece of yarn, tie a knot twice. Using your tapestry needle; sew the long yarn ends in and out of the pom pom through the center a few times. Add a dab or two of fabric glue to the center of you would like (Elmer's school glue works well too). Let dry. Cut through all your loops and trim up your pom-pom so it's nice and even.

Free Crochet Pattern: Reusable Water Bombs (balloons)

Hello and welcome to the blog. I have a very fun, quick & easy pattern to share with you today!

It's starting to warm up here in Wisconsin and my family loves a good outdoor game and if said game includes water it's a win, win! These balloons are much easier than filling tiny latex balloons, trying to tie them without cutting off the circulation to your fingers & lets not forget the clean up of tiny pieces of balloon all over the yard. The bonus of being able to reuse these balloons is a big deal for me!

I have been working with Bernat Blanket Yarn a lot lately and was able to use up all my scraps for these balloons, I also gave Bernat's Pipsqueak Yarn a try with this pattern using a double strand and the results were good but I do prefer the blanket yarn. I wanted to make sure my balloons would hold a good amount of water so I made little pom-poms and stuffed one inside of each balloon. I first tried stuffing some extra yarn pieces inside of some balloons and after being used the yarn started popping out through the stitches. Not a big deal, you can just push it back into the balloon but the pom-poms help keep the yarn gathered together inside better.

Pom-Pom's 

First you need to make your pom-pom's that are used for stuffing the balloons. You need one pom per balloon. I've put together easy steps for you to follow below:

Balloons
*For the stripe balloons I worked my 2nd color in row 4.

Row 1: Magic circle, ch 1, 6 hdc in circle. Join. (6)

*Pull circle tight & sew in end.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in ea. around. Join. (12)
Row 3: Ch 1, *hdc in 5, 2 hdc in next.* Repeat *to* 1 more time. Join. (14)
Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in ea. around. Join. (14)
Row 5: Ch 1, hdc2tog, *hdc, hdc2tog.* Repeat *to* 3 more times. Join. (9)
*Insert one pom-pom at this time.

Row 6: Ch 1, hdc, *hdc2tog.* Repeat *to*  3 more times. Join. (5)
Row 7: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each. Join. (10)

Fasten off leaving about a 12" end, using your tapestry needle sew the balloon shut between rows 6 & 7. Sew in the remaining end.

Using the Balloons:
Now that you've crocheted up your group of balloons, you're ready to go and get this water balloon fight started! Using your balloons is easy, simply place them in a bucket (a bucket per person is helpful) and fill with water! That's it, let the battle begin! Cleaning the Balloons:
 After use you can choose to just rinse your balloons well, squeeze out the excess water and lay in the sun to dry or if they've gotten muddy during play I suggest hand washing in your kitchen sink with laundry soap, rinse, squeeze out excess water and then lay out to dry.

Free Crochet Pattern: Ice Fisherman's Stretchy Neck Warmer

This men's cowl came about as an idea from my father. He owns a bait shop and was wanting a few cowl type scarves to have in his shop for the ice fishermen in the winter, the request was for something simple with some stretch to ensure a fitted and warm neck warmer. Row 1: Ch 27, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. Ch 1, turn. (26 sc)
Row 2-22: In FLO: Sc in each. Ch 1, turn. (26 sc)
Row 23: Sc in each, working your way around the entire rag. In each corner work the following [sc, ch, sc]. Sl st to join. (approx. 26 sc per side)
Fasten off and sew in ends.
