Free Crochet Pattern: Heart Pot Holder

Last week I shared a simple heart scrubby pattern and today I have a matching pot holder to share with you. You can find the scrubby pattern here: Scrubby Heart. The patterns are very similar but for this pattern you will be crocheting 2 hearts and then you will hold them together and single crochet around the edge to make them one. I tried a couple different yarns for this pattern when testing and I suggest a softer cotton yarn like I love this Cotton from Hobby Lobby or the Mainstays 100% Cotton Yarn from Walmart.

After you have turned your piece over count from right to the left and place a stitch marker in the 17th stitch. You should have 14 stitches to the left of the marker and 16 to the right. Leave stitch marker in place, you will be coming back to this stitch later.

Row 17: Hdc2tog, hdc in 11, hdc2tog. Ch 2, turn. (13)

Row 18: Hdc in 11, hdc2tog. Ch 2, turn. (12)

Row 19: Hdc2tog, hdc in 10. Ch 2, turn.(11)

Row 25: Hdc2tog, hdc in 11. Ch 2, turn. (12)

Row 26: Hdc in 10, hdc2tog. Ch 2, turn. (11)

If this is the first heart: Fasten off and set the finished heart aside. Make a 2nd heart using the same pattern above.

If this is the second heart: Do not fasten off just yet. Continue on with the directions below.

Sew all ends in now except for the yarn you are working with. I like to sew them all in on one side of the heart and then have those sides facing each other. This way the ends are on the inside of the pot holder.

Hold the two hearts together and re-grab your yarn. Ch 1, ss through both hearts, ch 9, ss into the same space to form a ring. (see photos below)

Ch 1, turn, 15 sc in ring. Ss into the same space you made your ch 9 in. Work 2 sc into the very next stitch to the left, sc in next, 2 sc in next. (see photos below)

Continue to sc around the entire edge making sure to work through both hearts. When you reach the next 3 open stitches at the top of the next hump work 2 sc in the first stitch, sc in next, 2 sc in next. Continue to sc around. 

At the bottom tip of the heart work 3 sc.

Ss to join when you are back around to the ring. 

Fasten off. Sew in end.

Using edge color:

Ss so join in any space. *Ch 2, ss in next* repeat from *to* around. Join. Fasten off and sew in ends.

Finishing

When you have finished all your desired toppings, sew them to the cheese/sauce piece.
Sew in ends.

Next, you need to crochet together the crust & the cheese/sauce. To do so, hold the Crust & the Cheese/Sauce with the wrong sides facing each other.

Using Tan:

With the cheese/sauce facing you, join yarn with a sl st in any space. Keep in mind, your pot holder hanger will be worked in this space at the end of the row.

Make sure you are working through all 4 loops as you go.

Ch 1, sc in same and in each sp around. Join with sl st. Turn so the crust side is facing you. [Ch 8, sl st to the open sp to the left], Ch 1, turn, work 14 sc over the ch, sl st into the same sp as the ch 8.

 Fasten off and sew in ends, I like to use one of the ends to help make sure the loop isn't too floppy by sewing through the 1st & 14th stitches in the loop and then I sew the end up into the loop.

Free Crochet Pattern: Toast Pot Holder

When working along the sides work 1 sc into the side of each hdc row. Don't work your sc's too tightly or your bread may bunch a little (feel free to switch to a hook size up for this part if you can't work the sc's loosely). You should end with 21 sc along the two sides of bread, 39 sc along the top & 27 sc along the bottom.

Join, fasten off and sew in ends.


Butter
(make 1)

With Yellow:
Row 1: Ch 9, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. (8)
Row 2-6: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in same and in each across. (8)

After row 6, ch 1, turn & sc around the entire edge of butter working a ch 2 at each corner.

Join & fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.

Sew butter onto one slice of bread.

After you have sewn your butter on, hold the two bread slices together with the butter side facing you. Join your dark brown yarn in any space and slip stitch all the way around, you will need to ch 1 at each corner.


Loop

To add a loop to your pot holder first decide where you would like the loop then turn the pot holder over and join in your chosen sp on the back of the pot holder.

Work the following into the sp you joined in: [Ch 8, sl st]. Ch 1, turn, work 14 sc over the ch, sl st into the same sp as the ch 8.

Fasten off and sew in ends.

Free Crochet Pattern: Chicken Dish Rag or Pot Holder

This cute chicken can be made as a dish rag or a pot holder. The pattern is written for the dish rag option but here’s what I do to use it as a pot holder: First I crochet two complete chicken body/heads then I sew them together around the edges. After they are sewn together move on to the wattle, feathers, comb and beak working your stitches through all four loops of both bodies.

At this point if you have decided you would like your pot holder to be double thick and you have made 2 bodies, sew them together just below the loops. You will still need to work along the edges of the body to add the remaining details. When you move on make sure you are working through the loops on both bodies.

Wattle

With Size H Hook & Red Yarn:

Join with a sl st in the same space as you just fastened off for the body/head.

Row 1: Ch 1, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Hdc in same, sl st in 2. Fasten off, knot these two ends together then sew them in.

Feathers

With Size H Hook

Note: If you do not want a loop for hanging, fasten off before ch 10 at the very end of row.

Skip 3 spaces from where you fastened off for the wattle and join with a sl st in the next space (leave 3 spaces unworked).The feathers will be worked over the next 71 spaces. Double check count before starting, if you missed a stitch somewhere and only have 70 (for example) you may need to skip only 2 spaces. It’s always good to double check before starting.

Ch 1, *sk 1, 5 dc in next, sk 2, sc in next* repeat *to* 12 more times for (13 feathers made). Sk 1, 5 dc in next, sk 2, sl st in last, ch 10 and sl st in same space. 
Fasten off and sew in ends.

Comb

With Size H Hook & Red Yarn

Join with a sl st on top of the head in the space all the way to the right.

*Ch 2, dc in same, in next space: [dc, ch 2, sl st into same], sl st in next.* Repeat *to* 3 more times (4 made). Fasten off and sew in ends.

Beak

With Size H Hook

With yellow join with a sl st in the 5^th stitch from where you just fastened off with red for the comb. [Ch 2, dc], fasten off and sew in ends.

Optional Eye

With tapestry needle, stitch on a little eye above the beak. I usually leave this off of the pot holders I make that are only one layer because I don’t like that the end can’t be hidden easily. Maybe a small wooden button would work well, a plastic button may melt if a very hot pan is placed on the pot holder.

Free Crochet Pattern: Chevron Rag or Pot Holder

This simple pattern yields a larger size rag, if you would like a slightly smaller rag you can try going down a hook size. The pattern is written for the Yellow & White Chevron design in the above photo, feel free to change up the color changes how you wish though.

If you would like to add a some texture to your rag, work in the BLO for rows 2-20.

Below is an example rag worked in the Back Loop Only (and the border was also left off).
