Free Crochet Pattern: Women's Vertical Cable Beanie with Slouchy Option

(Shown in Red Heart With Love Pewter & White with White Lion Brand Pom)

Hello crochet friends! A few weeks ago I shared on Instagram a beanie I was working on with a vertical cable and now that it has been tested a few times I am very excited to share the finished pattern with you! Originally I only created the beanie version but I thought it would work great as a slouchy hat too (this is now my fav. slouchy hat!) so I have both options written within the pattern.

(Shown in Big Twist Premium Ivory & Red Heart With Love Black with a Black Lion Brand Pom)

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Crochet cables are not the simplest instructions to write out so I've also included a short photo tutorial for the turning rows of the cable.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
-Jenni

  4. This is so beautiful and I really want to make it. But I have difficulty at very beginning. Why do I get 36 stitches on Row 4?
    2+1+(2+1)+(3*7)+1+1+6+1=36

  5. Is there a fpdc before join on 4 row as the end of row 3?

  6. Thank you for such a beautiful hat pattern... For round 3... I think I'm doing something wrong.
"Ch 1, 2 dc in same, dc in next. *2 dc in next, dc in next.* Repeat *to* 4 more times. Fpdc around next, dc, fpdc around 6, dc, fpdc around last" leaves me with 2stitches left unworked :(
    Please help!

    1. If you'd like to send me a photo to my email (byjennidesigns@gmail.com) or on facebook at facebook.com/byjennidesigns I could probably help you better. My only guess would be maybe you need to work one more of the repeat? How many stitches do you have at the end of row 3?

    2. I understand it now. I was sleep deprived so I was misreading the last part of that round. Thank you for responding so quickly!

    3. I am having the same problem! I've redone it 3 times now and still end up with 2 stitches left at the end of row 3. How did you fix it?

      Delete

  7. I'm confused. Your picture (6th one down) has the stitches (fptr) identified as 3,2,1 and 3,2,4. Shouldn't those be 3,2,1 and 6,5,4?

    1. Hi, if you look at the photo again you will notice two of the stitches are marked as "skipped" and the other is showing the fptr's in the order they should be worked.

    2. Thank you so much! Is a gorgeous pattern. I made it with a chunky Charisma yarn. I had to make a couple of adjustments. But it came up beautifully!!!

  10. I keep ending up with 30 stitches at the end of row 3. I had 22 stitches at the end of row 2, but after doing 6 FPDC in row 3, I still have 4 stitches to work in before the end of my row. Any suggestions?

  14. If I wanted to change colors for the side how would I do that?

    1. Hi Natalie, sorry to just now be getting to your question. I haven't tried changing the color yet for the cable but it definitely could be done by joining a new color for those stitches.

  17. Hello what a fast fun and easy pattern! I do however have a few questions... is this the pattern in its entirety? I noticed there is no bpdc/ bptc and also I'm using a worstweight yarn with an I hook as recommended for your pattern and the only crossing I see is the fptc any suggestions? Tia
