Free Crochet Pattern: Toddler Mouse Hat


Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate

Size: Toddler, 2-4 years, 19-20" head circumference

Supplies:
Worsted Weight Yarn
        Example shown in: Red Heart With Love Pewter
                                        Red Heart Super Saver White & Black
                                        Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Dusty Rose
Size H (5.0 mm) Crochet Hook
Size G (4.0 mm) Crochet Hook
Tapestry Needle
Scissors

Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms):
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Hdc2tog – Half Double Crochet 2 Together
Rs – Right Side
Sc – Single Crochet
Sc2tog – Single Crochet 2 Together
Sc3tog – Single Crochet 3 Together
Sl St - Slip Stitch
Tr – Treble Crochet
Ws – Wrong Side


Hat 
With Grey & Size H Hook 

Notes:
-Joins are made with sl st.
-Ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch.
-Gauge: 4 hdc x 3 rows = 1".

Row 1: Magic circle (or ch 3, join), 11 hdc in circle. Join and pull circle tight, sew in end. (11 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same and in each around. Join. (22 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in next, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next.* Repeat *to* around. Join. (33 hdc)

Your circle should measure approx. 2 ½” across the center.

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in same and in each around. Join. (33 hdc)
Row 5: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in 2, *2 hdc in next, hdc in 2* Repeat *to* around. Join. (44 hdc)
Row 6: Ch 1, hdc in same and in each around. Join. (44 hdc)
Row 7: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in 3, *2 hdc in next, hdc in 3.* Repeat *to* around. Join. (55 hdc)

Your circle should measure approx. 5” across the center.

Row 8: Ch 1, hdc in same and in each around. Join. (55 hdc)
Row 9: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in 4, *2 hdc in next, hdc in 4.* Repeat *to* around. Join. (66 hdc)
Row 10-21: Ch 1, hdc in same and in each around. Join. (66 hdc)
Fasten off.


Earflaps 

Join in the 11th stitch from fasten off.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in same and in 10 more. Ch 1, turn. (11 hdc)
Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in 7, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (9 hdc)
Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc in 5, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (7 hdc)
Row 6: Hdc2tog, hdc in 3, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (5 hdc)
Row 8: Hdc2tog, hdc in 1, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (3 hdc)
Row 10: Sc3tog.
Fasten off.

Leave 24 stitches unworked in the front of the hat.

Join in 25th stitch.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in same and in 10 more. Ch 1, turn. (11 hdc)
Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in 7, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (9 hdc)
Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc in 5, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (7 hdc)
Row 6: Hdc2tog, hdc in 3, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (5 hdc)
Row 8: Hdc2tog, hdc in 1, hdc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Hdc in each across. Ch 1, turn. (3 hdc)
Row 10: Sc3tog. Ch 1, turn and sc around entire edge of hat & ear flaps.
Fasten off.

With pink, sc around edge of hat & earflaps.
Fasten off and sew in ends.


Ears 

Notes:
-Make joins with sl st.
-The side facing you as you crochet is the RS.
-Ch 1’s & 2’s do NOT count as a stitch.
-When you sew your ears to the hat be sure you are sewing down about 2" of the ear to the hat so they will stand up nicely. If you don't, the ears will flop around.

Inside Ear
(make 2)
With White & Size G hook 

Row 1: Magic Circle (or ch 3, join), ch 2, 10 dc in circle. Join. Pull magic circle tight and sew in the end. (10 dc)
Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same and in each around. Join. (20 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in next, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next* Repeat *to* around. Join. (30 hdc)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in same, sc in next 2, *2 sc in next, sc in next 2* Repeat *to* around.
Join, fasten off and sew in end. (40 sc)

Outside Ear 
(make 2)
With Grey & Size H Hook

Row 1: Magic Circle (or ch 3, join), ch 2, 10 dc in circle. Join. Pull magic circle tight and sew in the end. (10 dc)
Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same and in each around. Join. (20 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, hdc in next, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next* Repeat *to* around. Join. (30 hdc)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in same, sc in next 2, *2 sc in next, sc in next 2* Repeat *to* around. Join. (40 sc) 

Do NOT fasten off yet, switch to size G hook; hold WS of inside ear to WS of outside ear and sc pieces together.

Fasten off leaving a long end to sew ears on to hat.


Nose 
With Pink & Size G Hook

Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Sc2tog, Sc in next, Sc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc3tog. Ch 1 & sc around edge, ch 1 at the corners.
Fasten off leaving a long enough end to sew on to hat.


Eyes 
With Black & Size H Hook 

Magic circle, ch 1, 7 hdc in circle. Pull circle tight and join.
Fasten off leaving a long enough end to sew on to hat.

You could also use two small buttons for eyes.


Large Bow(optional)
With Pink & Size H Hook 


Row 1: Ch 28, Join with beginning chain being sure not to twist chain. Ch 1, hdc in same & in each around. Join with sl st. (28 hdc)
Row 2-3: Ch 1, hdc in same and in each around. Join with sl st. (28 hdc)
Fasten off leaving a very long end, enough to wrap around the center of the bow about 20 times.


Small Bows (optional)
(make 2)
With Pink & Size H Hook


Magic circle, ch 3, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st into circle (Half of the bow complete). Ch 3, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st into circle. Pull circle tight and fasten off leaving long enough end to wrap around the center about 8 times.

Sew all your pieces on to the hat and then move on to the whiskers below.


Whiskers 

Use white yarn and tapestry needle to stitch on whiskers.


Braids 

For each braid use 5 strands of each color cut to about 15”.

  3. What size head does this fit? I want to make one for my year old son who's head is about 18"

    1. This hat is toddler size (19-20" head circumference) so it may be a little bit big for your 1 year old.

    2. It fits his head, I just did only 16 rows instead of 21. So far so good.
